Blog Response #1

"Teen Won't Return Explicit Book to Library"

You've read the article about the 15-year-old that wouldn't return her book to the library because she thought it was too explicit for her school's library.

Now, discuss with your classmates:

  1. Do you think her actions were fair?  Should she have the right to not return the book?
  2. Should people/communities be able to ban books from libraries because of sexual content?  Why or why not?
  3. Are their books that you're aware of that you think should/should not be banned from public or school libraries?
  4. Should teens be exposed to books with explicit sexual content?  Why or why not?

2 - I think that she should not have taken the book from the library beacause some other kid may want it, and if the school put it in the libary then it is a book that everybody can read. No they should not be able to beacause everybody likes diffrent things, just because she does not like it it doesnt give her a reason to keep it. Yes i am aware that there is some books that should not be in a school library but if one student doesnt like it then they shouldnt do anything. (Comment this)

3 - lysa and her grandmother should'nt filed out the report about tnat it's stupid if u ask me. She has to realize that everybody doesn't look at her side of view.If someone wants to read Sandpiper book than that ok ,she should look up on other book to read or she should of read the bak of the book to see what it was about, how they going to get made about a book it's so many books out ther that have to deal with sex, guns, violence and everything else so they should of made a complaint and all the books that have to deal with this situation. my opinion i think it's good for teen because it's teaching us how to pertect ourselves and not make the same mistake that they have accomplish not all books are good but some is helpful.i don't think that the writer was wrong for that book because she been trough something in her life.

4 - Quite honestly I agree that, that kind of book has no business being in a high school's library. At the same time the student needs to return the book so the board can remove it from the shelves. Basically the student needs to do what's been asked of her and the board needs to remove the book. Also I find it hypocritical that a school that teaches abstinence would have that kind of book inside its halls.

5 - Personally, I believe that a book with graphic, sexual content isn't appropriate for school. Of course, taking a book and simply refusing to return it is a bit sill--for you could simply return the book and then notify the school of the issue. Not all people think that it would be bad to have a book with sexual content in it--for no one wants boring books at school and could find a real interest in it. It all depends on who is checking out the book, and if the majority of people checking it out in the past are giving back comments about the book, then the school should consider taking the book off the shelves. However, I still do believe that books in a High School that basically 'promotes' sex should not be in a school.

6 - What I read in the article, the book they mentioned seemed like an inappropriate book for teenagers. I don't think that the library there should be charging her for not returning the book. I think it is obvious that the library didn't read into what this book was about. I really don't know why someone would write & publish a book of that nature. Why would someone want to read a book about a girl that is more or less a ho?

7 - If this happened to me I would be totally freaked out. Also, if I did this my mom would not approve of this either. If I was here I would have sewed the school. The reason because I think that is very inappropriate.

8 - I agree with her dicision, that doesn't want other students to red that book but she could have better choice instead of just do not return the book to school. She could just go to the librarian and tell about that book and solve this problem with out making a touble with school. (Comment this)

9 - Micaela Mclennand,Micaela Mclennand, i agree with the fact that different people have different taste as well as the fact that this particular kind of book should not be in a high school library. (Comment this)

10 - Stephen Fredricks, I agree to your comments. I think she should return the book to school library. but if she just read few pages of book before take it tp home it won't be that problem (Comment this)
